Best Kept Competition 2023 – The Results

Third time lucky, and the final round of judging for this year’s Best Kept Allotment competition took place at the beginning of August. We had to postpone it twice due to the poor weather. Two independent judges scored the 21 shortlisted plots for Best Plot Overall and the shortlisted 6 plots for Best Newcomer 2024. The judges had a difficult task this year as it was a closely fought contest.

Adam H (CR47B) scored the most points at Clothall Road and is the Best Plot at Clothall Road. Stephen D (NR39) scored the most points at North Road and is the best plot at North Road. Congratulations to Adam H, who scored the most points overall and will be awarded the Basil Byrant Cup. Winners will receive a £25 voucher to use at the Members’ Shop. Presentations will be made at the 2023 AGM.

Here are the results for the newcomers. Lesley F (CR37A) scored the most points at Clothall Road and is the Best Newcomer at Clothall Road. Terry and Melody M (NR24) scored the most points at North Road and both are the Best Newcomer at North Road. Lesley will be awarded the Frank Conway Cup and Terry and Melody will be awarded the John Gray Cup at the 2024 AGM. In addition, the best Newcomers will receive a £10 gift.

Congratulations to all the winners and finalists. The pictures of the winning plots can be found in this article, and bigger versions on the website. Hopefully, this will give you some inspiration for next year!

Raised Beds

The Baldock Rotary Club needed some space to start some trees for the new woodland in Baldock. We didn’t have any plots available to help them, but we did have some raised beds that needed repair.  Once they had removed all of their trees, they repaired all of the raised beds, so we can now let them to prospective tenants.

The raised beds are ideal for those with mobility challenges or a disability. They are elevated, making it easier to reach and tend to plants.

If you are interested in a raised bed, please fill out this form here.

Ecofest 2022

On Saturday 07 May, BALGA had a stand to talk to attendees of Ecofest about growing your own food and allotments. Our stand was on Baldock High Street and it was nice to speak to some of you. A few people came and enquired about a plot.

We have a waiting list of over 40 people, but we did talk to the public about the benefits of being a member. There are many benefits to becoming a member of BALGA. For example, you’re able to use the Members’ Shop which is open every Sunday until the end of November. You can take advantage of buying seeds from our Kings’ Seeds catalogue at considerably lower prices. You also receive bi-monthly newsletters and allotment magazines. Visit the Shop this Sunday (until the end of November) to find out more.

We would like to thank you for buying tomato plants (kindly donated by committee members Alison and Phil), and sunflower seeds. All the money raised will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukrainian appeal or Baldock School’s Gardening Club.

We would like to say thank you to Christine at Ecofest for allowing us to have a stand. Also, thank you to all of our volunteers who represented BALGA.

SUNFLOWERS FOR UKRAINE

Small packets of Sunflower seeds are now on sale in the BALGA shop (three seeds for just £1). All money received will be going to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for Ukraine. The Sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine so, in addition to raising funds, growing them will help to show support for the Ukrainian people.

AGM 2022

The BALGA Annual General Meeting will be held on 21 March 2022 at 7.30 pm at the Baldock Community Centre. You should receive your paperwork soon by email (hand delivery for those not on email), which will include reports and a copy of the proposed draft amendments to the BALGA Constitution which must be approved by a majority of members present before it can be adopted. There will be presentations made to the winners of the Best Kept Allotment Competition 2021.

Members are invited to ask questions or make comments on any of the agenda items, but if you wish to raise any item under any other business this must be notified to Phil (gensec@balga-online.co.uk), our General Secretary by 14 March, giving details of that item. The community centre has a bar, so you’ll be able to buy refreshments. We look forward to seeing as many members as possible. It’s a great way to meet your committee and members.

Although we cannot ask you to wear a mask, if you would feel more comfortable wearing a mask, then please do so. It is your preference as to whether you
wish to continue to wear one.

Sunset at North Road Allotment Site

Have a look at this lovely picture of a sun setting at North Road allotment site. We’ve had such nice weather recently, so it’s a perfect opportunity to work on your plot. Enjoy the sun while you can because we are due some much needed rain.
