FAQ

BALGA FAQ

I’ve sent a message about wanting a plot, what happens next?

One of our site reps will be in touch to discuss the current plots available and to arrange a site visit.

I’ve chosen my plot, what now?

We will send your copies of the tenancy agreement and any other relevant documents for you to sign and an invoice for your rent and membership to BALGA. The tenancy agreement must be returned to the General Secretary and he will arrange for two trustees of the association to sign the same and return one copy to you.  Your personal data will be handled in accordance with the BALGA Data policy.

What Does it cost?

In 2021 the annual rental for a full plot is £114 per year, and a 50% concession is available to tenants over 60, or tenants in receipt of benefits.  Rent for smaller plots is calculated pro rata. The allotment year begins on 1 November, and if the tenancy starts later in the year, rent is calculated on the basis of the number of days remaining until the allotment year end.

Membership of BALGA costs £6 per year, and is necessary for all tenants and co-workers, to provide appropriate insurance cover.

When can I start digging?

As soon as your tenancy agreement has been signed by the trustees, and the rent has been paid!

Who do I contact if I have a problem on my plot?

In the first instance, speak to a committee member on your site, or the site representative.

What if I just want to use your shop?

Leisure gardeners are welcome to join the association and benefit from purchases at the shop, use of the Kings Seed Scheme, and can collect horse manure and brown-bin compost from the allotment sites at member’s rates. They pay the standard £6 per year for annual membership.

What is a Co-worker?

A co-worker is someone who is registered to assist a tenant on his or her plot. The co-worker is a member of the association and pays the standard £6 membership fee. Should the tenant decide to give up their tenancy, the co-worker has an automatic right to take over that tenancy.
