Water usage

Watering helps to keep our plants alive but not necessarily to thrive as they would with decent rains. Water use on both sites has obviously increased considerably but I remind you of some steps that can help ‘stem the flow’.

  • Ideally water early morning or late evening
  • Concentrate on crops that really need water – those newly sown or planted and top up when needed.
  • Mulch around plants to help prevent evaporation
  • Dig a hole a spade’s width and depth, fill it with manure or other organic matter, place a little soil on top, and water well before planting out tomatoes, courgettes etc., similarly, a trench for beans etc., leaving a shallow depression around plants to keep the water where it is needed.
  • Overwatering can be counterproductive. Plants can become lazy spreading their roots near the surface where watering supplies them rather down to find moisture to make a stronger root system and plant.
  • When watering is necessary, better to give a soaking once a week rather than a dribble each day.

Affinity Water recently sent an email to inform us that they’re seeing above-average water use. They pleading customers to use less water to reduce the demand to make sure there’s enough water for essential use throughout the summer period. They advised customers to use a watering can to water plants instead of a hose saving 80 litres of water at a time.

BALGA Open Day 2022

Remember, we are hosting our annual BALGA Open Day at Tapps Garden Centre on Saturday, 13 August (12 pm – 3 pm), to celebrate National Allotments Week. It’s a perfect opportunity to meet committee members and other members. You can collect the new Kings’ Seeds catalogue with prices considerably less than garden centres. We will have an interesting display with glut-busting recipes, site maps and North Road expansion, interesting articles from the National Allotment Society and updates from BALGA. Phil will also have heritage seeds with advice on how to grow them.  Refreshments will be available from Tapps. It would be great to see you there.

AGM 2022

The BALGA Annual General Meeting will be held on 21 March 2022 at 7.30 pm at the Baldock Community Centre. You should receive your paperwork soon by email (hand delivery for those not on email), which will include reports and a copy of the proposed draft amendments to the BALGA Constitution which must be approved by a majority of members present before it can be adopted. There will be presentations made to the winners of the Best Kept Allotment Competition 2021.

Members are invited to ask questions or make comments on any of the agenda items, but if you wish to raise any item under any other business this must be notified to Phil (gensec@balga-online.co.uk), our General Secretary by 14 March, giving details of that item. The community centre has a bar, so you’ll be able to buy refreshments. We look forward to seeing as many members as possible. It’s a great way to meet your committee and members.

Although we cannot ask you to wear a mask, if you would feel more comfortable wearing a mask, then please do so. It is your preference as to whether you
wish to continue to wear one.

Sunset at North Road Allotment Site

Have a look at this lovely picture of a sun setting at North Road allotment site. We’ve had such nice weather recently, so it’s a perfect opportunity to work on your plot. Enjoy the sun while you can because we are due some much needed rain.
